Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION: Mainframe Operator – responsible for the monitoring, operations, integrity, and technical support of the Department’s IBM System mainframe environment.  Must be able to monitor the mainframe control consoles and respond to operating system and computer messages. Must be able to identify, analyze, and trouble shoot job failures and issues and participate in problem investigation and resolution.  Must be able to provide assistance to the customers and the on call system engineers.  This position requires:

 

  1. Provide monitoring support for mainframe LPARs across all DOJ data centers.  Check all monitors (i.e. Big Brother Dashboard and Patrol, etc.) for alarms and ensure tickets are open on selected sites down.
  2. Process system backups and prepare for offsite storage.
  3. Process Vaulting jobs and prepare for offsite storage.
  4. Answer incoming calls and direct request to system engineers, if problems can’t be resolved quickly.
  5. Performs facility checks.
  6. Continuously monitor for high priority ticket outages or major issues.
  7. Perform status updates to BMC REMEDY system on any open tickets and follow up with customers.
  8. Return incoming offsite tapes to IBM tape silo.
  9. Check and make available enough scratch tapes for stand-alone tape drives.
  10. Distribute paper to copiers and printers.
  11. Submit resource information to monthly billing report process.
  12. Process any restore requests on the VM System.
  13. Load Backup tapes in VNS Servers.
  14. Verify Batch Jobs for BOP, FMIS, and DEA are in the queue for execution. 
  15. Cancel or release and start batch jobs per user request on mainframe LPARs.
  16. Assist customers with starting VPS printers.
  17. Recycle customer’s ONLINEs per request.
  18. Release and start system initiators.
  19. IPL system LPARs during monthly mainframe outage.
  20. IPL system LPARs per request.
  21. Check status of HIDRO backups.
  22. Strong analytical, performance tuning and problem resolution skills.
  23. Proven ability to determine, analyze and resolve software and device related problems.
  24. Demonstrated high level communication skills and ability to develop positive relationships with customers, team members, vendor service providers and stakeholders.
  25. Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  26. Strong customer service skills
  27. Required HW: IBM z196, IBM z10, IBM EC12, IBM TS3500 VTL, IBM TS7720/7740 VTL.  
  28. Required SW:  Operating Systems:  z/OS, zLINUX, zVM; IBM SW:  JES2, TSO, ISPF, SDSF,  JCL, FTP, VTAM, SMS, SyslogD, Teleview, IBM Utilities, Tape Management Software (CA-1), CA-Scheduler; Other:  BMC Remedy Change Management, Reflections, CONNECT:DIRECT

Qualifications:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Typically requires high school diploma or equivalent and 3 – 5 years of prior relevant experience. 

Must be able to successfully obtain a Public Trust clearance in order to work on the contract.

This is a part-time/on-call position, with anticipation of working 3-5 days per month.
