The Special Projects Division of Leidos has a career opening for a Flight Test Engineer located in Bridgewater, VA.


The job of the Flight Test Engineer is plan, coordinate, manage, and executes full spectrum flight tests on manned, unmanned, and lighter than air (LTA) aircraft.  The ideal candidate will be assigned as the Flight Test Engineer for multiple airborne programs and support the technical director and program manager.


-Prepare for flight tests by a review of applicable requirements and specification documentation as well as industry studies to determine the technological state-of-the-art.

-Determine project requirements for FAA certification or military airworthiness releases.

-Plan and publish a flight test plan with mission relatable, requirements traceable, and intuitively testable metrics along with a scope and method to evaluate systems in an environment commensurate with their level of maturity.

-Coordinate cross team, subcontractor, and customer personnel (pilots, sensor operators, data analysts, test observers, etc.) to support test execution.

-Execute flight test plans.

-Utilize the concept of “build-up” to progress from benign, low risk data points to the more challenging to promote safety and minimize hazards to aircraft and crew.

-Coordinate test range support from ground based targets to airborne instrumentation and telemetry.

-Provide on-site test management, data collection, briefing, debriefing, and configuration control.

-As required, fly and/or operate test systems and/or instrumentation during test events.

-Analyze test data and produce test reports that provide and archive test scope, method, results, supporting data, conclusions, and recommendations based on the system’s intended mission, stated requirements, and applicable specifications.

-Manage a database of system deficiencies or “squawks” discovered in the flight test program and monitor efforts toward correction.

-Conduct follow on testing for verification of correction of deficiencies.

-Support customer acceptance test procedures.

-Support development of training packages based on test results and lessons learned.


-Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and minimum of 5 years of related flight test experience; degree can be substituted with minimum total of 10 years of flight test experience.

-Must be able to pass FAA CLASS 3 flight physical.

-Candidate must be able to travel throughout the U.S. to support flight tests and have the ability to obtain a passport or visa to travel internationally.

-Diverse flight test experience with a variety of manned and unmanned air vehicles, as well as experience working in an agile and fast paced environment.

-Comfortable in the presentation of preflight mission briefings as well as program status briefs to customers and senior decision makers.

-Leadership, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and organizational skills.

-Proficiency in MS Office software products.

-Must have an active Secret security clearance and be able to obtain a TS/SCI clearance.


-Knowledge and experience in the flight testing of electro-optical sensors.

-Graduate of a military test pilot school.

-Technical Master’s Degree.

-Familiarity with FAA airworthiness directives and Army regulations.

-FAA pilot certification.
