Paralegal/Legal Assistant I
This position is in support of the United States Attorneys Office (USAO) in Las Vegas, NV at 333 Las Vegas Blvd.South. The estimated length of this assignment is through May 31, 2018 with the possibility of one(1) one year extension. Overtime and travel may be authorized as needed with proper approvals via chain of command. Provides a variety of direct legal support assistance services to attorneys and staff within the Criminal Division at the USAO in Nevada. The Employee will work primarily in an office setting; May also attend meetings and assist at hearings or trial which will require the Employee to work in a variety of settings. Typical assignments include, but are not limited to: -Reviewing, organizing, summarizing and compiling voluminous documents. The paralegal will also work with Automated Litigation Support (ALS) personnel to organize document databases and may be responsible for additional data input. -Conducting legal research, and completing other legal writing related projects as assigned; assisting with briefing of legal and other issues in cases and filing documents with the court through the court's electronic filing system. -The Employee will also be working with the assigned attorneys in responding to discovery, drafting routine correspondence, coordinating witness interviews and other meetings, and preparing any needed documents and other materials. -Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists. Coordinates with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelines relating to victims' rights and services responsibilities. Notifies appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues. -Using original and online legal resources, verifies citations and statutory references contained in legal documents. Ensures citations are complete and consistent with source material. -Developing tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established format. Lists cited cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs. -Composing original letters that do not require legal interpretations, but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, such as transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, contacting investigating agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants. -Works and interacts professionally and effectively with all levels of staff. Ability to meet established deadlines and work as a team player in a professional office. Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner. -Performs other related duties as assigned.
*Proven excellent written and oral communication skills. *At least ONE (1) year of litigation paralegal experience. *Paralegal Certificate. An equivalent level of training may be substituted. *Proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel MS Access or other similar databases and Outlook), Adobe Professional and WordPerfect Office Suite or similar applications. *Must have basic knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform legal research; Thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. *Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important. *Ability to work and interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff. *Ability to meet established deadlines and work as a team player in a professional office environment. *Skilled in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner. *Some walking, standing, bending, moving documents and carrying small office items. *Ability to obtain a security clearance. *Experience working in a government and/or legal environment. *Background in Criminal Law preferred. *Trial Experience very helpful. *Automated litigation suppport experience very helpful (i.e Concordance, Summation, iConect or similar databases). *Current or active clearance.
